July 16, 2019 marked the 40th year since the worst radioactive “accident” in United States history which happened at the United Nuclear Corporation’s Northeast Church Rock, N.M. uranium mine site on July 16, 1979 when over 1,100 tons of solid radioactive mill waste and more than 94 million gallons of acidic radioactive...

Letter to the Editor: PERA fiduciary duties

E-mail Print PDF
Over the past few years the PERA Board has spun out of control and neglected its fiduciary duties. Various news outlets have documented the inability of the Trustees to get down to business and address the serious deficiencies identified with the long-term solvency. Budgets have not been submitted in accordance with State law and correspondence to the Trustees from the State Auditor states “This failure to act to submit the budget by the statutory date was reckless or negligent, or both, and coupled with the Board’s lack of focus on its fiduciary responsibilities, puts retirees and future generations of retirees at risk. The Board’s behavior is unacceptable and harms the fund’s...

The Sun is in Cancer. The shy crab is an intelligent creature that carries its home and armor on its back. This makes an interesting pairing with Mercury in Leo. Our ideas will become grander with a little focus on the details. Madame G recommends digging-deep and exploring all possibilities. Don’t limit yourself! You can always figure out the logistics later.

$150,000 for irrigation improvement

U.S. Senators Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich announced July 8, that the Navajo Agricultural Products Industry, located in Farmington, was awarded $150,000 in funding from the U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Reclamation’s WaterSMART Program for its Irrigation Scheduling Improvement Project.

The funds for NAPI will help improve irrigation scheduling and efficiency by monitoring system equipment and installing a moisture probe. The more efficient system will reduce over-watering, which is expected to result in annual water savings of 2,672 acre-feet. Water conserved by the project will reduce the amount of water diverted from Navajo...

Letter to the Editor: Nuclear waste remains active concern in McKinley County

Editor,

If Holtec International has its way, high-level radioactive waste (“spent fuel”) from Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant in New York and almost 100 other reactor sites in the U.S. would be transported on America’s highways and brought to southern New Mexico for “interim storage” although in my own view, this is a false narrative that is countered by the example of the Yucca Mountain repository and the site(s) will be permanent.

Permanent because the spent fuel will have to be moved again if another repository site is found. The Yucca Mountain project began in 1982 after the passage of the Nuclear Waste Policy Act that requires “the establishment of a deep geologic...
