Youth ART123 showcases young artists downtown

Students from Gallup and the surrounding area got the chance to display their unique forms of artwork at YouthART123 at the Artscrawl in Gallup March 9. The art show was held at Gallup ART123 to showcase schools such as Lincoln Elementary, Hozho Academy, and Mariano Lake Community School to name a few. Future artists consisted of children from kindergarten to high school with their own style of expression. Art teachers were on hand to talk about the forms of art their students were working on.

The Rio West Mall, 1300 W. Maloney Ave., held its fourth Annual Holiday Craft Fair Nov. 17 with over 40 vendors present. Many homemade items and delicious goodies were up for sale to kick off the holiday season.

Talented crafters from the area were on hand in hopes of selling their unique talents, which ranged from from airbrushed T-shirts to zany dinosaur stuffed animals and beyond.

According to Rio West Mall Leasing and Marketing Director Hannah Madrid, the fair was a great way to get the community together and showcase local crafts.

ART123 exhibit features 14 local artists

Stop and smell the metaphorical flowers at gallupARTS Oct. 13 through Nov. 6 with Art All Around Us. The show is composed of works by local artists and held at ART123 Gallery.

An opening reception will be held Oct. 13 from 7-9 pm.

Find the beauty in everyday objects, occurrences, landscapes and city scenes with the help of 40 pieces, ranging from painting to photography to collage to found object assemblage to sculpture to drawing by 14 local artists.

Artist urges youth to ‘be your truest self’

The auditorium in Calvin Hall at the University of New Mexico Gallup was filled Sept. 5 for an artist lecture by Douglas Miles, whose artwork is on display in the Ingham Chapman Gallery as part of the exhibit New Native American Art to Brighten Your Day, which runs through Sept. 24.

Miles, who hails from San Carlos, Ariz., may be known to locals as the founder of Apache Skateboards, which has operated for the past 15 years.

During the lecture, Miles said Apache Skateboards began as a personal project that caught the attention of the community and evolved into a business.
