How Rep. Ben Luján is in the pocket of the Sugar Cartels

E-mail Print PDF
Dear Editor,

Congressman Ben Luján (D-NM-3) is in the pocket of the nation’s beet and cane sugar cartels!  Luján continually votes to maintain the U.S. Sugar program.  Why? It is really quite simple, Congressman Luján received well over $53,000 in political donations from the sugar cartels since coming to Washington in 2009.

Thanks to Rep. Luján and others, the U.S. Sugar Program continues. The Sugar Program is a Soviet style command and control scheme that restricts planting and imports. This inflates the price of sugar in the United States to almost double the world price. So, when you go to the store to buy a snack cake or anything sweetened, you pay more!

Letter to the Editor: The Time is Now to Expand NM PreK

E-mail Print PDF
The New Mexico Early Childhood Development Partnership (NMECDP) recently spent the day in Gallup. The day included a visit to Rehoboth Early Childhood Center and a lunch and community conversation at the Gallup Community Service Center.

NMECDP is focusing on a multi-year initiative to expand the state-funded, voluntary state PreK program to every 3-and 4-year-old who wants it. According to KIDS COUNT, 45.5% of McKinley County’s children, ages 0-5, live in poverty.  Only 49.6% of McKinley County’s 3 and 4-year-olds are enrolled in PreK. For some children, this means that they are entering kindergarten so far behind that they will never catch up.

The time is NOW to expand NM...

Recognizing Indigenous People’s Day 2017

E-mail Print PDF
Editor,

Without elaborating on the systematic genocide, the vicious cycle of homelessness and alcoholism and the undue suffering of our native people and the loss of our land since 1492, the countless termination of Indigenous Peoples lives, the rape of our women and the enslavement of everyone else still alive and the exploitation of our cultures, it is our desire to allow healing to take place, to honor our ancestors, to educate the world, to establish our rightful place in history and to demonstrate and teach our children—to the Seventh Generation—what equality, diversity and inclusion is all about.

The man who was lost and about to thrown overboard by his crew in 1492...

Letter to the Editor: Put a gag on President Trump

E-mail Print PDF
President Trump needs to be gagged.

And apparently all we have left to do it is the public pressure and Congressional approbation to get the job done.

In the old Vaudeville days when an actor was bad they used a hook to pull him off the stage. We can’t do that with President Trump, but we need to.  He is antagonizing the nutcase in North Korea.

We don’t need another foreign conflict.

We have been in Afghanistan for 16 years and can’t seem to pull out. We never should have invaded Iraq. Saddam Hussein was killing 350 people a year.  Since our intervention a half million Iraqis’ have died. President Obama said that Assad in Syria should go.

Now half of Syria is in Europe...

RE: “CLOSING THIS CHAPTER” Gallup Sun, July 14, 2014

July 21, 2017 was a day filled with both happiness and sadness as I attended the retirement event for Mary Ellen Pellington, the director of the Octavia Fellin Public Library in Gallup, New Mexico for the past eight years.  Her last day on the job will be August 01 but her legacy will last forever.

As is her nature, the welcoming atmosphere was felt even as she invited me to sit at her table along with another “favorite patron”, Chris.  The theme was “Let’s blame it on the BOOGIE!”— Totally 1970’s, with a well decorated “meeting room” that was totally transformed into a disco dance room with a ball light device and vinyl records hanging from the ceiling and on the...
