Letter to the editor: What to do with the mask/no mask policy

E-mail Print PDF
When I was a teenager, I saw signs at stores or small businesses “NO SHIRT NO SHOES NO SERVICE.” I can also remember signs in stores that read “WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO REFUSE SERVICE FOR ANY REASON.”

Now, when I go into a store it reads “Masks Required & Stay 6 Feet Apart”.  Most people are wearing them, a few...

Letter to the editor: Learning opportunities in a more peaceful world

Editor,

A GMCS announcement in Gallup Sun’s May 28th edition of a promising opportunity for STEM Core students drew my attention.

I hope this “internship” program is still available for local students and hope participating students will enjoy gaining more understanding of their true interests and begin exploring career pathways.

Over the years some taxpayer-financed research in the National Labs has been beneficial. One notable example was providing the expertise needed for the development of the 2016 JCPOA, the Iran Nuclear Deal.

However, students visiting the Labs might now learn that production of nuclear weapons has replaced much of the Labs’ research activity...

FOG’s Transparency: Key to Democracy Project

Transparency issues often focus on elected bodies and whether they follow the law governing public meetings, or executive agencies and whether they comply with statutes like the New Mexico Inspection of Public Records Act.

Important questions, to be sure. But a judicial system that is open and accessible to the public is every bit as important, or perhaps more so, when we consider its role in a functioning democracy. Are traffic roundabouts in Gallup’s future?

According to traffic statistics, Gallup has an extremely high rate of car/truck crashes.  The New Mexico Department of Transportation looked at all of the crashes in the Gallup area — driving, walking, biking, etc. The area around the Interstate 40/U.S. 491 interchange emerges as a top priority. According to an accompanying report, the interchange area has almost 15 percent of the crashes that occur in the Gallup area “making the facility unsafe and unreliable.”

The report indicates that a crash occurs approximately every three days in the interchange area. Over the last five years there have been over 200 rear-end, 121 side-swipe and 97 head-on accidents.

Remember that this...

Letter to the editor:: On gun control

E-mail Print PDF
Well, more mass shootings this Labor Day Weekend 2021, as Miami Chief of Police asks Congress to do more about gun control, https://nypost.com/2021/05/30/miami-pd-chief-calls-for-tighter-gun-laws-after-concert-shooting/.

I think I can speak with some knowledge about guns and police since I served six years in the Air Force, four of which was a firearms instructor, and two as a Security Police Law Enforcement.  Make sure when someone tells you they were Security Police in the Air Force you ask them if they were Security Police or Law Enforcement there use to be quite a difference!  The LE do what most normal police do in the civilian world versus SP that guard resources.  Some...
