Navajo Nation Council honors UFC Women’s Flyweight Champion Nicco Montano

WINDOW ROCK – On the opening day of the 2018 Winter Council Session, the 23rd Navajo Nation Council recognized and congratulated Nicco Montano, a member of the Navajo Nation from the community of Lukachukai, who recently won the Ultimate Fighting Championship inaugural Women’s Flyweight Title.

The UFC Champion was joined by family members on the Council Chamber floor as Council Delegate Tom Chee (Shiprock) and Speaker LoRenzo Bates (Nenahnezad, Newcomb, San Juan, Tiis Tsoh Sikaad, Tse’Daa’Kaan, Upper Fruitland), presented her with an honorary plaque and thanked her serving as a positive role model for all Navajo people, particularly Navajo youth.

UPDATE: McKinley County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Robert Turney said this evening that Ryan Westman is in the custody of San Juan County Sheriff's. Earlier this evening, Westman was located, pursed, at some point he opened fire on officers. Westman sustained minor injuries to his arm when officers returned fire. He was being treated at a Farmington hospital, and was or will be booked into San Juan County Adult Detention Center.

A local Gallup man, Ryan “Bam” Westman, is wanted for allegedly beating a man on the head with a blunt object, according to McKinley County Sheriff’s Department investigators.

Mustang east robbed at gunpoint

Shortly before 1 am Friday, the Mustang at 3440 E. Highway 66, was robbed at gunpoint.

Gallup Police Department Capt. Marinda Spencer said that detectives are currently investigating video footage and clues from the holdup, so there's only a few details available this morning.

She did say there's more than one suspect involved, but didn't have their descriptions immediately available.

When asked if the Mustang robbery was possibly connected to the Wednesday evening armed robbery of Front Row Seat, 2824 E. Highway 66, Spencer said it's something that's too early to tell, but detectives are investigating all leads.

Gallup Mid School student wins spelling bee

The 2017-2018 McKinley County Spelling Bee went for 23 rounds before TaSheena Thompson, an eighth grader at Gallup Middle School, was declared the winner after correctly spelling the word “trespasser.”

The district spelling bee was held at the Kenneth Halloway Auditorium at Gallup High School. Three judges sat at a table front and center of the stage and the pronouncer, Wade Bell, Gallup McKinley County Schools Director of Instruction, sat at the podium left of the stage.

Thompson and second place contestant Jerome Rabaya, a fifth grader from Red Rock Elementary, will represent the district at the New Mexico Spelling Bee at Sandia Preparatory School...
