Ceremonial celebrates 100 years with $100,000 artist prize pool

The juried art show is always a big draw for the Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonial, and what better way to celebrate the 100th event than with a $100,000 prize pool?

This year’s prize pool started building in 2018, when the Ceremonial Association introduced the Centennial Club for donors. Businesses and individuals were invited to make a $1,000 commitment toward this year’s event, either in lump sums or in $250 installments over four years. The goal was to get 100 donors signed up.

HIDING CONTRABAND

Gallup, July 15

When Gallup Police Officer Norman Bowman Jr. arrived at Octavia Felling Public Library, 115 W. Hill Ave, shortly after 3 pm, the man identified as Ty Treetop, was uncooperative.

Treetop, 30, who was reportedly carrying a pipe, refused to answer the officer’s questions.

Meanwhile, it was discovered that Treetop had a warrant for his arrest, and he was immediately detained and transported to McKinley County Adult Detention Center.

About an hour after Bowman dropped him off, jailers informed the officer that they found contraband on Treetop. The man had two bags of a crystal-like substance on him: one in his mouth and one in his butt. Treetop was...

Man shot at Champion Ford

A man was shot at the Champion Ford car dealership.

On July 17, at 6:59 pm, Gallup Police Officers were called to Champion Ford, 701 W. Coal Ave. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered a Native American man laying in the parking lot. They saw that the man had a gunshot wound to his head.

Medical personnel transported the man to the local hospital. He was later flown to the UNM hospital in Albuquerque. The man, who has not yet been identified, is currently listed in critical condition.

Fatal shooting on Rim Rock Drive

Gallup Police officers were dispatched to the 800 block of Rim Rock Drive on July 17 at 1:45 am because a man had reportedly been shot.

Officers arrived on scene and discovered a man laying in the parking lot of the Red Hills Trailer park office. Officers saw that the male had a gunshot wound to his upper body.  Medical personnel arrived on scene where the male was transported to the local hospital, where he eventually died due to his injuries.
