Boxing Resumes in Gallup

The last time boxing was alive and well in Gallup was several years ago when Jimmy Montano, now the head softball coach at Miyamura High, was working with the Police Athletic League program. Since then, nothing, except for a much more modified event called MMA which involves cage fighting.

Joe Olivas, who has been in Gallup for about five years, hopes to change that with his small group of young “Lights Out” fighters, aided by his assistant Raymond Yazzie. Ron Garcia has trained more than a few MMA fighters at No Mercy MMA since 2006, but Adrian Yazzie perseveres despite his 3-6 record and will be fighting June 6 at Buffalo Thunder Casino to attempt to push his record to more positive numbers. He will be fighting Josh Morales of the Jackson MMA.

Coach Garcia says that Adrian has come a long way to get to where he is today. “He has fought some tough opponents in his career and is working hard to get to the top. Adrian has been humble and knows that in this sport, it’s any fighter’s game on any night. Win or lose, never underestimate your opponent.”

Hillary Clinton to hold Albuquerque fundraiser

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton will be in Albuquerque next month for a campaign event.

According to a tweet by former Albuquerque mayor Martin Chavez, the former Secretary of State and U.S. Senator will appear at a fundraising breakfast on June 3. The fundraiser will take place at the house of Ed Romero, a former U.S. Ambassador to Spain.

A photo of the invite is included at the bottom of the post.

Chavez is a long time Clinton supporter and he was a senior adviser to the Ready for Hillary PAC that ran until Clinton officially announced she would run for President last month.

Bowling tournament raises funds for scholarships

Over 200 bowlers participated in the Eighth Annual Willie ‘Iceman’ Knight Bowling Tournament on May 9-10 at Gal-A-Bowl. They were registered in three divisions: Red, White and Blue and were allowed to participate in more than one division, according to their season’s averages.

Winning the Red Division was the team of Cathy Mitchell and Donna Gonzales, while second place went to Karmela Kinsel and Roger Kinsel. Sheila Canete and Ed Canete took third, and Alex Patterson and P.J. Montoya were fourth.
