Things are just beginning to gear up after the holidays, but there are a few notable features arriving on shelves. The end of the year is here, which means that the movie studios will be opening the floodgates and offering a wide variety of entertainment options to choose from. There are plenty of features to go though, so we’ll take a brief chronological look at what is on the way. Please remember that release dates do change at the last minute and unexpected additions often occur. Occasionally, award-caliber films are released around the country slowly and may take a couple of extra weeks to arrive in your town or appear on streaming outlets.

Making a comedy about the possible end of the world is no easy task. Despite this less-than-amusing scenario, a few have used these fears to humorous effect, including Stanley Kubrick’s 1964 classic, “Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.” Admittedly, the new film “Don’t Look Up” isn’t as sharp or cutting as that cinematic classic. However, much of what is presented onscreen does feel eerily accurate and there is enough effective satire and commentary here and there to make one laugh and send a chill down the spine.
