A Yah-ta-hey man was arrested on multiple charges of assault on health personnel after he reportedly threatened three health professionals at Rehoboth McKinley Christian Hospital.

Gallup police were called to RMCH on Oct. 5 about 2 pm because of complaints about dealing with one of the hospital’s patients, Carlos Shorty, 45. Shorty had been transferred to RMCH the day before by officials at the Gallup Indian Medical Center for a mental health evaluation.

Police were told that during the day Shorty had tried to run away, back to a group home where he had been living.

Gallup Police Officer Iris Pinero said she was dispatched to mile marker 22 on Interstate 40 in connection with a car hitting the bridge at Munoz Overpass.

When she got there, she found Terrance Manygoats, 18, of Rock Springs who immediately told her, “I’m not going to lie. I had a couple of drinks.” He later admitted that that couple of drinks was actually a 12 pack of Budweiser.

A bench warrant has been issued against a former candidate for the Gallup-McKinley County School Board.

According to New Mexico court records, a bench warrant was issued on Oct. 25 by Grants Magistrate Judge Johnny Valdez after Olin Kieyoomia failed to show up for a hearing.

Kieyoomia, who lost to Kevin Mitchell in the Nov. 5 school board election, had been given a citation for driving on a suspended license. He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was scheduled to have a hearing on the matter Oct. 25.

The only record of a DWI charge against Kieyoomia is from Feb. 2007. He was also charged with careless driving and resisting arrest in that same incident.

Although it’s only a misdemeanor, abandonment of a child is one of those charges that could have a profound effect on the lives of children in this area.

The actual charge is abandonment or abuse of a child and it usually is given when a child or even a young teenager is found being taken care of by a parent, relative, or caregiver who is too intoxicated to watch over the safety of that child.

It’s also a crime that seems to be on the rise as many families in this area deal with the effects of alcohol abuse.
