Customer can’t pay, raises ruckus

Ivan Mike Largo was the customer from hell.

Employees at Fratelli’s Pizza north of Gallup learned this when he visited the restaurant about 7 pm on Oct. 17 and rang up a bill for $58.82 and then refused to pay for it, leading to a confrontation with the restaurant’s owner and police.

McKinley County Sheriff’s Deputy Terence Willie was dispatched to a residence on the 1600 block of Highway 122 in reference to a domestic disturbance.

Metro Dispatch informed Willie the two people fighting were Sharon Leyba and Austin Leyba, 43, of Prewitt. Willie arrived at the residence with Deputy Johnson Lee and they found both people inside. Witnesses reported that Austin had been chasing Sharon toward the Prewitt post office, so Willie detained him inside his unit.

McKinley County Sheriff’s Deputy Roane Alan was dispatched to attempt to locate a black Chevy Spark after Metro Dispatch informed him the driver had been refused sales at the Sagebrush liquor store.

The vehicle was reportedly heading east on Highway 264. Alan was patrolling U.S. Highway 491 and headed north to locate the vehicle. He observed a car matching the description going south at the 4.5-mile marker.

Alan turned around and followed, noting the Spark could not maintain its lane as it traveled southbound. After turning on his emergency equipment, the suspect vehicle stopped at the 2-mile marker.

Local campaign launched to prevent freezing deaths

One freezing death is too many during the cold season in Gallup.




So, to help put an end to this seasonal crisis, Rehoboth McKinley Christian Health Care Services’ Behavioral Health Collaborative and seven collaborative behavioral health service members have launched their annual campaign to create awareness for residents in danger of freezing to death in Gallup-McKinley County’s numerous arroyos and pedestrian areas.




The group is building awareness by having the hospital’s WellSpring Recovery Center and Community Work Service Program members fan out across Gallup in November, distributing flyers to businesses for posting in store front windows.

Yah-ta-hey store burglarized

Deputy Paul Davis, Jr. was dispatched to Family Dollar, #26 Hwy. 264 in Yah-ta-hey, N.M. Nov. 5 to respond to an alarm called in by a business security company. Upon his arrival at 5:26 am, he found a broken window near the front entrance on the south side of the business.

A yellow vending machine for a local newspaper was lying next to the window.

Upon checking the area, Davis saw items had been disturbed and moved around the cashier’s area.

Davis and Deputy Michael Harvey entered the business through the broken window and found no one inside. Harvey found a rear entrance door was partially open. It appeared the suspects left through the entrance on the northwest corner.
