Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics

Kicking off the next 50 years

The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics is set for May 13 and will include walkers, runners, and bikers.

The walk will start at 7:30 am at the McKinley County Sheriff’s Office on Nizhoni Boulevard to Second Street and continues to Highway 66.

When the walk concludes, the run begins. Anyone who wants to run can meet at the corner of Second Street and Highway 66.  The run concludes at the New Mexico State Police office.

That’s where the bike portion begins.  Bikers will travel from the police office to Grants.  There are several resting spots along the way.

UNM-Gallup assistant professor wins Online Teacher of the Year

Dr. Shirley Heying, assistant professor within the Division of Arts and Sciences at UNM-Gallup, will be honored May 3 as the Online Teacher of the Year by the University of New Mexico Center for Teaching Excellence. The ceremony will take place on the UNM main campus.

In the award letter sent to Heying, Aeron Haynie, Executive Director of the Center for Teaching Excellence noted, “Students and colleagues provided strong evidence that you have made a significant positive impact on student learning.  Your commitment to the enhancement of teaching and learning has led to direct student benefit.  The pool of applicants was very strong this year. Founder Barbara McAneny calls it an ‘act of love’

The New Mexico Cancer Center held a ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception for the opening of the Community Cancer Resource Center near UNM-Gallup.

The event, held April 15, drew visitors and invited guest speakers from the community.

One of the founders, Dr. Barbara McAneny, spoke to the crowd about how people had to travel to Albuquerque for treatment prior to the opening of the center. NMCC has been present in Gallup since 2007. McAneny talked about how cancer impacts more than a patient’s health.

A schedule of events along with local authors hit the Gallup area on April 12 - 13. Films and presentations were shown at the El Morro Theatre and El Morro Event Center.

Authors on hand were: Travis Holt Hamilton, Jimmy Santiago Baca, Curtis Quam, Sunny Dooley, Jessica Helen Lopez, and many more. “Poetry Out Loud & Indigenous Storytelling.” was held at the ArtsCrawl. Children’s events were held at the Children’s Branch,with film screening at the El Morro Theatre. The film More Than Frybread (2011) by Travis Holt Hamilton, was a hit at the El Morro Theatre.
