Gallup group looks at the decline in history education

“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” - George Santayana

Some would argue that whether we learn our planet’s written history or not, we may very well repeat the worst mistakes. But area historian and archaeologist Martin Link hopes to open up a discussion on the mounting crisis in history education (and arts education, music instruction, and more) that is increasingly lessened by a focus on vocational training, economic development, and the ensuing loss of critical thinking skills.

The impact of “High Stakes Testing,” or “Teaching to the Test,” has had some unfortunate impacts...

Senators looking into proposed seizure of land to build Trump border wall

WASHINGTON, D.C.-  U.S. Senators Tom Udall, D-N.M., and Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., announced Sept. 11, that the nonpartisan U.S. Government Accountability Office  will investigate the Trump Administration’s efforts to use eminent domain to “take the land” of private landowners by any means necessary in order to build an ineffective border wall.

Editor,

With the 2020 U.S. Presidential Campaign underway, the likelihood of having more debates with challengers to Donald Trump has taken a new turn with two Republicans joining the race, with former Representative Joe Walsh of Illinois entering on August 24th launching his bid for the Republican nomination, and Bill Weld, the former governor of Massachusetts.

Twenty Democratic candidates are still in the mix although the requirements to stay in the race have been more of a challenge for them than Trump; they must top one percent in three polls from pollsters approved by the Democratic National Committee or tally 65,000 unique campaign donors, with at least 200 donors in 20...

“U.S. Senate interns gain invaluable experience as they learn to navigate our nation’s legislative process and the Capitol’s halls,”  Udall said Aug. 12. “It’s been a pleasure to work with Raven this summer, and I hope she finds her experiences during this internship rewarding as she finishes college...

WASHINGTON, D.C. -  Congresswoman Xochitl Torres Small, NM-2, released a statement Aug. 23 calling on the Trump Administration to reconsider changes proposed to the interpretation of the Flores Settlement Agreement concerning detention of migrant children in federal facilities.

“Children are especially vulnerable when they are held in detention. The Flores Agreement addresses that fact. We all recognize that our immigration system is broken, but keeping children in detention with no end in sight does not improve safety or reflect our values.  I call on the Administration to reconsider its decision, and come to the table to work with the leadership from both parties and Chambers to...
