WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. - Programs within the Department of Diné Education are about performance and assessment. On a periodic basis throughout the year, DODE holds trainings for teachers, school board members, and school administrators to improve performance in teaching and school operations. Teachers must be highly qualified.

Once again, the Annual Navajo Nation Fair was a wonderful event to attend and be a part of. This year’s theme was, “Let us come together as one: Through Ke’ we are strong.” Ke’ means clanship.

Along with families enjoying fun and excitement, the 70th annual fair was filled with anticipation for the crowning of the 2016-2017 Miss Navajo Nation on Sept. 10.

The 2016 coronation was held at the Dean C. Jackson Memorial Arena in Window Rock, Ariz. A packed house waited for three and a half hours to see who would be the next Miss Navajo Nation.

Kellwood served in WWII, won Congressional Silver Medal

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. – Navajo Code Talker Private Joe Hosteen Kellwood died Sept. 5 at the age of 95.

Kellwood was a Navajo Code Talker who served in World War II. He was trained at Navajo Code Talker’s School at Camp Elliott in San Diego, Calif. Kellwood was the recipient of the Congressional Silver Medal.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Sept. 7, U.S. Senators Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich announced that New Mexico will receive $2,604,223 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to improve access to potentially life-saving treatment and prevention programs for people addicted to prescription opioids.

In 2014, New Mexico had the second-highest rate of drug overdose deaths in the nation, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Udall and Heinrich have strongly urged Congress to provide funding and support to help communities treat and prevent prescription opioid drug abuse.
