State to deliver millions in rebates, economic aid this summer
SANTA FE – The New Mexico Taxation & Revenue Department and Human Services Department are partnering to deliver income tax rebates and economic relief payments signed into law by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham earlier this spring. Applications for non-filers to receive the relief payment are extended until 5 pm, June 10.
Approximately 33,544 applicants are currently eligible for a relief payment and about $18.1 million in relief payments are expected to be issued this July based on the applications approved so far.
In addition to the millions of dollars in automatic rebates allocated to taxpayers, $20 million was appropriated during the 2022 Special Legislative Session for financial relief for New Mexicans who do not file taxes, such as low-income seniors and some individuals with disabilities. New Mexicans who do not file income tax returns are eligible to apply for the economic relief payment.
The deadline to apply for a relief payment was extended to June 10, because there is still approximately $1.9 million in available funding through the program. The original deadline to apply was May 31.
Households of married couples or single individuals with one or more dependents can receive economic relief payments of $1,000, and households of single individuals without dependents can receive $500. Payments are available to applicants on a first-come, first-served basis.
“With this extension, more New Mexicans from our most vulnerable communities have more time to apply for this household relief,” Lujan Grisham said. “Across the nation, families are feeling the extra cost of gasoline and groceries, and these payments are meant to ease that burden. I encourage non-filers to apply.”
The relief payments are intended only for those New Mexicans who do not file income taxes. Depending on their filing state, income tax filers will automatically receive rebates of $250 or $500 in June and again in August and should not apply for the relief payments.
Individuals who do not file income tax returns will be able to apply for an economic relief payment until 5 pm on June 10. Applications must be submitted online through HSD’s YES-NM website at www.yes.state.nm.us. However, applications may be closed before that time if available funds run out.
“The assistance is there for you – apply online for these economic relief payments today. It’s fast and easy,” David R. Scrase, M.D. cabinet secretary for the New Mexico Human Services Department, said. “We want every New Mexican who is eligible to take advantage of this opportunity and build on these resources, especially for those in need.”
If non-filer funding does run out, a non-filer will still have the option of filing a New Mexico Personal Income Tax return to obtain a rebate as late as May 31, 2023.
“There is still time for New Mexicans who don’t file a tax return to apply for a relief payment,” Stephanie Schardin Clarke, secretary of the New Mexico Texation and Revenue Department, said. “But even if someone isn’t able to get an application in on time, they will still have the option of filing a 2021 Personal Income Tax return through May 2023.”
The Taxation and Revenue Department and Human Services Department strongly encourage all New Mexicans to file state income taxes, even if they are exempt from doing so because they have little to no income. Not only do tax filers automatically receive a rebate, they may also be eligible for additional tax benefits.
