A Sept. 23 fire caused the occupants of a Gallup mobile home to seek shelter elsewhere, officials said.

Gallup Deputy Fire Chief Jesus Morales said city firefighters responded to a fire at 3507 Camino de la Tierra at about 8:17 pm.

“It looks like [the fire] was intentionally set,” Morales said. “We are still investigating the matter.”

Morales said firefighters arrived at the scene within minutes. He said the foyer of the home was destroyed. There were no humans injured in the fire, but two dogs that sought safety in a back room of the residence perished. The Gallup City Council unanimously passed a resolution at its Sept. 27 regular meeting that establishes a Gallup Indigenous Peoples’ Day. The matter received some discussion, and in the end, council members agreed with area civil rights activist Mervyn Tilden that the naming was long overdue.
