TOHATCHI, N.M. — Do-it-all senior point guard Kalian Mitchell tore through Rehoboth Feb. 24 and catapulted the Lady Cougars into a first round state playoff game against Loving (14-11, 3-5). That game is March 2 at Tohatchi High School at 6 pm. Tohatchi won the state 3A girls basketball championship last year.

Ashley Antone scores 17 in District 1-5A win

Gallup junior forward Ashley Antone scored a game high 17 points and the Gallup Lady Bengals rolled over the Kirtland Central Broncos 53-41 Feb. 17 in a basketball game at Gallup High School.

The Lady Bengals improved to 17-9, 6-4 on the 2018 season and the Lady Broncos fell to 15-9, 5-5. The game was the last of the regular season for both teams.

“We just didn’t do in the second half the same things that we did in the first half,” Kirtland head coach John Zecca said. “The game was played evenly in the first and second quarters. It was the second half that made the difference.”

The first quarter ended 11-9 with Gallup on...

The Bloomfield Lady Bobcats exploded in the third quarter and clamped down profusely on defense and beat Gallup 60-40 Feb. 10 in a District 1-5A girls basketball game at Gallup High School.

Both teams were competitive in the opening quarter, as the Lady Bengals won the first quarter 13-12. Each team appeared to be defensive-minded in the first quarter, but one could see that it was a matter of time before Bloomfield’s Brandi Alcantar, Halle Payne and Alyssa Quintana got things together enough to stick it the Lady Bengals. Alcantar and Quintana are seniors, Payne a sophomore.

The lead in the opening quarter changed six times, with a...

Lady Lynx hit by scoring deluge from Cameron Tsosie

REHOBOTH, N.M. — The Tohatchi Lady Cougars and the Rehoboth Lady Lynx played one of the most evenly matched basketball games anybody has ever seen, at least in the first half, some people mused after the Feb. 6 game.

It was near the end of the second quarter that enabled the Lady Cougars to pull away and beat Rehoboth 68-46 at Rehoboth Christian School. The game was a much-hyped contest with Tohatchi (18-6, 5-0) ranked No. 1 in District 1-3A and Rehoboth (14-9, 2-2) sitting at No. 3. The Newcomb Lady Skyhawks (12-11, 4-1) are ranked at the No. 2 spot in 1-3A. Tohatchi is undefeated in district play.

“We knew (Kalian...
