A Return to Adult Softball

It’s been a while since I’ve visited the Sports Plex, and that was just a brief visit last year to watch Miyamura and Gallup High baseball utilize the large field that fronts the entryway.

A personal invitation by Women’s League director Sheila Battles Silva was all the encouragement I needed to return. Back in...

Southern Plains State Regional a success

The 2015 Southern Plains State Regional in Gallup last weekend finished up on Saturday with just a problem or two, but overall it was a success.

One of the problems was the seasonal rain (I refuse to call it a monsoon, since I know the real meaning of the word) on Thursday. Kudos and lots of thanks to the City Parks’ workers for jumping on the problem early and doing a great job in preparing the fields for more action. Well, there was a two-hour delay in the morning and another delay in the afternoon, but putting an hour and 45 minute time limit on the games took care of the rest of that problem and the first round was done by about 9:30.

Three events happened last week – two were related – and all provided venues of excitement and positive thoughts.

The GABSA (Gallup Amateur Baseball Softball Association) finished the city tournaments started last Saturday. All of the winners except three will be moving on to state playoffs, though one of those age-bracket tournament may yet be played if rescheduled in time.

Those three winners that will not move on are the Sandy Koufax Yankees, whose tournament was cancelled in Las Cruces. It is not known at this time if it will be re-scheduled. Another winner is the Willie Mays Dodgers, who won their division from a fourth seed. Their manager was unable to take the time off his...

The Fighting House Brothers

Life in the 1940s was not even close to the politically correct society of today. It was rough, and tumble, especially for the four brothers who grew up in Dilkon, AZ.

Their mother was from the Oneida Tribe of New York state, while dad was Dineh, and fighting quickly became a past time for all of them, even though there was seven years difference between the oldest and the youngest. But it is the life of the oldest, Gordon, that is the center of this story.

By 1940, the 15-year old House had won the first of three consecutive Golden Gloves championships in three different states, NM, AZ, and NV. Gordon even appeared on a fight card for the Third Annual 20-30 Club Boxing Tournament...

It’s Been a Busy Summer, Just a few Days In

The time has really seemed to fly past since graduation. Here we are on June 26 and look at what we’ve seen so far.

Gallup High had their Athletic Director, Domonic Romero, who is also the school’s boys’ basketball coach, transfer to a new position as Principal at Thoreau High School. Fortunately, one of his assistant coaches, Richard Rangel, will move into that vacancy and attempt to continue the success the team has experienced in the last few years.

The AD vacancy has been filled by James Malcolm, who had been the wrestling coach for the Bengals. No word on who might be slated to take that job or if Malcolm will be allowed to keep it.

The other high schools in our coverage...
