The film broke box office records and won four Academy Awards (it also earned a Best Picture nomination). Two expertly produced, award-winning, fast-paced sequels followed, cementing an iconic trilogy. In 2008, a follow-up arrived using ‘50s Cold War science-fiction flicks as its inspiration. Writer/director Wes Anderson has been making eccentric and visually striking movies for a great many years now. The personal quirks present in his projects are so distinctive that just about everyone has a strong opinion about him. This reviewer met a random performer in the city this week. After mentioning that I attended a recent press screening of Asteroid City, the individual felt compelled to tell me why he wasn’t fond of the artist’s work. This rarely happens when you casually mention a movie director to a stranger.

For decades, Pixar have been trailblazers in feature animation, wowing audiences with gorgeously rendered movies that also resonate emotionally with viewers. While their recent product has still been largely remarkable, it seems as though other production companies have begun to catch up, presenting equally dazzling and boundary-pushing tales. Pixar’s latest is Elemental and it is an impressive-looking film. Unfortunately, the story isn’t quite as overwhelming and the finished product doesn’t leave a lasting impact.
