Rating: ««« out of 4

Running Time: 146 minutes

Well, we’re now 13 films into the “Marvel Cinematic Universe.” Under the circumstances, things appear to be going quite well. Not every film has exactly soared creatively, but most present just enough to keep viewers entrenched and wanting more. The latest is Captain...

Welcome to another look at highlights coming your way on DVD and Blu-ray. There is plenty of fun stuff out there in a wide variety of genres. So if you can’t make it out to the movies this week, be sure to give one of these titles a try!

Big New Releases!

The Choice - The latest Nicolas Sparks romance novel to get the cinematic treatment is a tale about an unlikely relationship that forms between a diligent medical student and an easygoing ladies’ man. They fall for each other, but can these opposites really form a lasting bond? One thing’s for certain, the press didn’t care either way. They didn’t think there was much onscreen chemistry and found the formulaic drama...

Mother’s Day takes the stale, schmaltzy route

Running Time: 118 min.

No matter what you may read in the coming paragraphs, make no mistake, I appreciate the work of director Garry Marshall. Growing up, he was responsible for two of my favorite TV shows (Laverne & Shirley and Happy Days) and has had popular hits on the big screen with titles like Pretty Woman. However, over the past few years he’s delivered a pair of ensemble comedies (New Year’s Eve and Valentine’s Day) that I haven’t cared for. Clearly inspired by the excellent Christmas-set 2003 hit Love Actually, neither of them have come even close to attaining that sharp balance of humor and warmth.

Mother’s Day is the latest in his...

‘The Huntsman: Winter’s War:’ A chilly, clumsily mashed together movie

Rating: «« out of 4 starts

Running Time: 114 min.

I’m not entirely sure that anyone was clamoring for it, but this week we’re receiving yet another sequel. The follow-up to the 2012 Snow White film is called The Huntsman: Winter’s War. Unfortunately for fans of the first film, the heroine is merely mentioned in passing and only seen once (from behind). Instead, this movie is focused primarily on the title Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth).

Viewers will get a lengthy prologue narrated by what sounds like an uncredited Liam Neeson. We’re told that Ravenna (Charlize Theron), villainess from the first film, also had a sister named Freya (Emily Blunt). Devastated by the sudden death of...

‘Criminal’ wastes a talented cast, crew

Running Time: 113 min.

If you do happen to find yourself in the theater watching the action/thriller Criminal this weekend, I can think of a game you can play to pass the time. It’s called “The Dutchman” and it involves taking a drink each time you hear that name uttered. A word of warning - by the final act, it seems like it’s being yelled every single minute. I expect most will be thoroughly smashed by the credit roll. The fact there are now cinemas where drinking is a legitimate option leaves me both amused and frightened.

To put it bluntly, this movie is absurd. Its plot involves a CIA agent named Pope (Ryan Reynolds). He’s working an...
