There was both the good news and the bad news this week detailing drug operations around Gallup and McKinley County.

The good news is that at least eight suspected methamphetamine abusers have been taken off the streets. Arrests were made as part of the city’s routine sweeps of various neighborhoods by the Gallup Police Department and the McKinley County Narcotics Task Force.

The bad news is that we still have a serious problem in Gallup and the surrounding areas when it comes to meth, cocaine, marijuana and heroin.

“The Medicaid expansion under the ACA is not only providing health care coverage to thousands of New Mexicans who can otherwise not afford insurance, it also has generated the best job growth in the...

At the Feb. 6 regular meeting of the Gallup-McKinley County Board Of Education, two high school teachers pitched the idea of taking a small group of students to Europe for cultural exposure and to get some valuable education outside of the confines of McKinley County.

The cost of the trip, which would include visits to Berlin and Vienna, ranges in the $3,000 range, AP history teachers Garrett Stolz and Cody Moody of Miyamura High told school board members. A grand idea, but not necessarily something students around McKinley County can readily afford, board president Priscilla Manuelito quickly reminded the two.

While we at the Gallup Sun aren’t really against such a trip, which the...
