WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. — In a recognition ceremony held on the first day of the 2024 Fall Session on Oct. 21, Delegate Amber Kanazbah Crotty honored Sally Pete for her extraordinary 45-year career in nursing and healthcare leadership within the Navajo Nation.

The event underscored the Council’s commitment to recognizing healthcare professionals who have dedicated their lives to improving the well-being of the Diné people.

Pete, a recently retired nurse from Winslow Medical Center, received recognition not only for her extensive tenure as a healthcare provider but also for her impactful 20-year role as CEO of the Winslow Indian Health Care Center. During her career, Pete spearheaded critical initiatives to enhance healthcare access and quality for the Diné community, setting a benchmark for compassionate care and professional excellence.

Crotty delivered a heartfelt tribute to Pete.

“Sally Pete’s unwavering dedication, wisdom, and encouragement have been instrumental in uplifting the Navajo Nation," Crotty said. "Her 45 years of service, both as a nurse and as a strategic leader, demonstrate an exceptional commitment to advancing healthcare services for our people. We are deeply grateful for her vision, leadership, and advocacy, which have strengthened our community’s resilience and well-being.”

During her address, Crotty also highlighted the ongoing healthcare challenges within the Navajo Nation, particularly the urgent need for improved water infrastructure at the Dilkon Indian Medical Center.

Crotty, recognized for her tireless work in healthcare reform, social justice, and women’s issues, underscored the importance of honoring community leaders like Pete who exemplify dedication, perseverance, and advocacy.

The 2024 Fall Session recognition ceremonies stand as a testament to individuals who have devoted their careers to serving the community.
