McKinley County COVID-19 case numbers far outpace other counties

SANTA FE – New Mexico state health officials announced April 15, 80 additional positive tests for COVID-19, bringing the state total to 1,484 positive tests.

Per the state Department of Health, the positive test results come from:

•  13 new cases in Bernalillo County

•  1 new case in Cibola County

•  4 new cases in Doña Ana County

•  1 new case in Grant County

•  38 new cases in McKinley County

•  9 new cases in Sandoval County

•  11 new cases in San Juan County

•  2 new cases in Santa Fe County

•  1 new case in Socorro County

McKinley County now has 242 confirmed cases of the coronavirus.

Meanwhile, the number of deaths of New Mexico residents related to COVID-19 stands at 36.

In addition, there are 90 individuals hospitalized in New Mexico for COVID-19. This number may include individuals who tested positive for COVID-19 out of state but are currently hospitalized in New Mexico. This number does not include New Mexicans who tested positive for COVID-19 and may have been transferred to a hospital out of state.

Also, there are 353 people that have recovered from COVID-19 cases, per the New Mexico Department of Health.

The DOH noted community spread in Bernalillo, Doña Ana, McKinley, Otero, Sandoval, San Juan, and Santa Fe counties, and is investigating cases with no known exposure.

 

Timeline of the virus in New Mexico

April 9: State health officials announced 124 additional positive tests for COVID-19. DOH reported one additional death in the state. The number of COVID-19 related deaths in the state is now 17. As of today, there are 217 COVID-19 cases designated as having recovered by DOH.

April 10: State health officials announced 106 additional positive tests for COVID-19. DOH also reported two more deaths related to COVID-19, bringing the statewide death toll to 19. New Mexico now has had a total of 1,091 positive tests. There are 75 individuals hospitalized for COVID-19, and 235 cases designated as having recovered by DOH.

April 11: Health officials announced 86 additional positive tests for COVID-19. DOH also reported one additional death related to COVID-19, bringing the total to 20. There are 78 individuals hospitalized in New Mexico. As of today, there are 235 COVID-19 cases designated as having recovered by DOH.

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham announced today that houses of worship must now abide by a public health order banning mass gatherings to mitigate COVID-19 spread. Houses of worship were previously exempt from the public health emergency order banning mass gatherings, defined as five or more people in a single confined space. That order was amended today.

April 12: State health officials announced 74 additional positive tests for COVID-19. DOH also reported six additional death, bringing the total to 26, The state now had a total of 1,245 positive tests for COVID-19. As of today, there are 80 individuals hospitalized across the state.

April 13: State health officials announced 107 additional positive tests for COVID-19. The state also reported 5 additional deaths related to COVID-19, bringing the total to 31. There’s no 1,345 positive tests for COVID-19. As of today, there are 87 individuals hospitalized in New Mexico for COVID-19.

April 14: The state has launched a portal with more COVID-19 data specific to positive cases and testing in the state. The data dashboard currently includes county-by-county breakdowns of positive cases by age, gender and ethnicity. The portal also includes reporting about testing by county. DOH has conducted extensivetesting in Native American communities where clusters of illness have been identified, which at least in part explains the disproportionate share of the Native American population in the state’s total positive tests.

Editor’s note: As of press time on April 16, McKinley County has two more confirmed deaths, bringing the total to four; 265 cases with 23 new cases to date; statewide total COVID-19 cases 1,597.
