Running Time: 144 minutes

In case you haven’t already noticed, we’re beginning to venture into awards season. This part of the year is always filled with ambitious pictures featuring high drama that seem earmarked for Oscar glory…as well as some that aspire for the honors, but don’t quite make as strong an impression (at least for this writer). Motherless Brooklyn is one such example.

Everyone involved seems to be giving it their all with big performances filled with grand speeches and bold dramatic gestures. Yet while it’s watchable in the moment, the end result feels manufactured and one that never matches the films that inspired it.

Running Time: 108 minutes

Over the past several years, New Zealand writer/director/performer Taika Waititi has slowly and steadily earned a large fanbase thanks to his exciting work on What We Do in the Shadows, Hunt for the Wilderpeople and Thor: Ragnarok. His latest, Jojo Rabbit, is one of his boldest and most eccentric pictures, mixing satire, slapstick and drama in equal measure. Admittedly, the humor is hit and miss and the concoction won’t appeal to all. Running Time: 118 minutes

This film premieres on Netflix on Oct. 25.

Back in my teenage and college years, this film enthusiast spent many a night seeking out and watching the most eccentric and unusual features out there. In fact, my friends and I would often try to outdo each other, finding and bringing VHS tapes of odd, obscure midnight movies and soon-to-be cult films. One such discovery was Dolemite (1975), a bizarre and over-the-top-in-every-imaginable-way action/comedy starring Rudy Ray Moore. To the eyes of someone living in another country, the movie was equal parts hilarious, awkward and at points, completely mystifying.

Running Time: 118 minutes

It has been five years since the villainess from Sleeping Beauty was updated and transformed from a malevolent and sinister force into a misunderstood and tortured soul. The resulting film was a box office success, leading to the latest chapter in the series, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. Yes, the title is a bit of a misnomer, since the central character is once again treated poorly by humankind and forced into a situation beyond her control. Kids and those who enjoyed the first film will likely enjoy what they see, but those who weren’t charmed by the original won’t find anything to convert them in this follow-up.

The story...
