Holiday break-in spoils the spirit

Rhonda Quintana, one of the owners of Quintana’s Music got an unwelcome notification early in the morning Jan. 17. It was an alarm from Quintana’s Music Center at 112 W. Coal Ave.

The notification of a break-in came too late to save the two signature model guitars that were stolen from the store — the third and fourth such instruments stolen in the past three weeks.

Quintana told the Sun that a similar break-in occurred Dec. 27.

Considering the clues she has to work from, she believes the late Sunday night-early Monday morning during the holiday season may account for part of the situation.

Vehicle safety inspection leads to drug seizure at Gallup Port of Entry

McKinley County, NM – Two men were arrested when New Mexico State Police located over 500 pounds of illegal substances while searching a commercial motor vehicle at the Gallup Port of Entry on Jan. 21



A New Mexico State Police officer conducted a safety inspection about 7:57 am on a 2012 Volvo Commercial Motor Vehicle at the Gallup Port of Entry. As the officer conducted a safety inspection on the CMV, the officer observed seventeen black duffel bags, three cardboard boxes, two plastic totes, and a trash bag within the CMV’s cab and trailer. The officer detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the trailer.

Scammers calling McKinley County residents

The McKinley County Sheriff's Office reports that a man is calling local numbers identifying himself as Robert Mason from MCSO trying to get money from people by telling them there is a citation they need to pay or they will be arrested. The number is disguised as the MCSO telephone number, but it is not a call from the Sheriff’s Office.

MCSO and the courts never call asking for money over the phone.

Also they do not use Zelle, Paypal, Moneygram, Western Union, Venmo, Cash App, Google Pay or any other form of electronic payment.

DRIVER WITH PINK BACKPACK ABANDONS BRONZE CAR

A bronze Hyundai was left near Draco Street in the morning after the driver apparently left the area.

McKinley County Sheriff’s Deputy Paul Davis arrived at the scene and found the vehicle unoccupied. The caller met Davis and told him an unknown male carrying a pink backpack said the transmission went out and left. The caller said the man appeared to have something resembling a gun handle sticking out of his pocket, but the caller could not confirm that it was a firearm.

MCKINLEY COUNTY —Throughout the months of January, February, and March, the McKinley County DWI Task Force, including but not limited to the McKinley County Sheriff’s Office, Gallup Police, and New Mexico State Police, will be conducting DWI Checkpoints and Saturation Patrols along with seatbelt enforcement within McKinley County. Law Enforcement will be targeting impaired drivers on roadways and at checkpoints.
