Two suspects from Navajo Nation: one gets commerce interference charge

ALBUQUERQUE— A convenience store in Vanderwagen was the site of a robbery on April 18, 2019 that resulted in  the sentencing of three men to jail, two of them members of the Navajo Nation.

According to the plea agreements and other court records, on April 18, 2019, Julian Silversmith, 44 of Jones Ranch, N.M. drove co-defendants Aurelius Eddie, 20, of Vanderwagen and Kevin Marquez, 22, of Gallup, to a convenience store in Vanderwagen, with the intent to rob the store. As Eddie and Marquez entered the convenience store, they began waving firearms, and Eddie fired a round into the ceiling. A call came into Metro Dispatch of a suspected drunk driver near the Maverik station at 505 U.S. Hwy. 491, which led Gallup Officer Justin Benally to the scene. Benally saw a black Nissan Sentra with a matching license plate pick up another passenger and travel north. He followed the car, pulled it over near the Speedway station at 701 U.S. Hwy. 491 and conducted a traffic stop.

Hundreds of pounds of illegal substances seized

MCKINLEY COUNTY — Two men were arrested after New Mexico State Police located and seized over 500 pounds of illegal substances ranging from magic mushrooms to Fentanyl while searching a commercial motor vehicle at the Gallup Port of Entry on Jan. 21.

A New Mexico State Police officer conducted a safety inspection about 7:57 am on a 2012 Volvo. During the inspection, the officer discovered seventeen black duffel bags, three cardboard boxes, two plastic totes, and a trash bag inside the cab of the truck and trailer. The officer also smelled what seemed to be marijuana coming from the trailer.

While on an early patrol near America’s Best Value Inn, 2003 W. Hwy. 66, Oct. 7, Officer Dominic Molina saw a female try to hide inside of a dark Pontiac Grand Prix. He ran the car’s license plate through Metro Dispatch and found it was registered to a different vehicle.

Molina pulled up to the Grand Prix and two passengers got out. They remained still at his command and indicated another male was the driver. Molina approached the side of the car and made contact with Bryson Hickson, 28, of Grand Mesa, Ariz.

Driver drank 15 beers before getting behind the wheel

A Gallup Police Officer appeared to be in critical condition after a two-vehicle collision with a driver who may have been drunk.

Officer Timo Molina traveled to the crash site near the intersection of Maloney Avenue and North Fifth Street. He arrived at the scene and saw members of the Gallup Fire Department working to free Officer Iris Martinez from her unit, which had sustained heavy damage to the driver’s side by a black Ford F-150.
