gallupARTS is proud to present “Challenge Gallup: A Native Artist Group Show for Social Justice” at ART123 Gallery. Opening July 14 from 7 - 9pm (during ArtsCrawl), and running through Aug. 4, Challenge Gallup spotlights 11 Native artists whose work tackles timely and relevant social justice issues, from homelessness to diabetes to environmentalism to stereotypes.

For example, Diné painter Adam Maria calls attention to (in his words) “the epidemic of Type 2 diabetes in the Navajo community” by juxtaposing food contributors to diabetes with natural lifestyles. In his painting “Type 2,” he contrasts a crushed soda can with a blue bird.

ALBUQUERQUE – The Spanish Colonial Arts Society’s Winter Spanish Market returns to Albuquerque for the fifth successive year on Dec. 2 and Dec. 3. This year the NHCC campus will host the event. Founded in Santa Fe in 1988, this will be the Winter Market’s 29th year since it emerged as an offshoot from the original Spanish Market, which takes place in Santa Fe every summer.

This year’s Winter Market will bring 70 artists to Albuquerque, giving members of the general public and collectors alike an opportunity to make early holiday purchases while keeping away from the big box store madness after Thanksgiving. It’s a lineup that showcases some of the best and brightest talent in the independent filmmaking industry.
