On April 13, at about 7:00 am, Gallup Police Officers were called to the Cliffside Apartments on the west side of Gallup in reference to a domestic dispute.
On arrival, Officers discovered Fran Tah, 34 of Gallup, and a juvenile female had both been shot in the chest. Both were unresponsive. Officers summoned medical personnel and started performing CPR, while also searching for the suspect. Despite their efforts, the two females were later pronounced deceased.
Police identified the suspect as Herbert Jefferson Sr., 71 of Fort Defiance, AZ. Jefferson was the father-in-law to Tah and the grandfather of the juvenile female.
Officers learned that Jefferson had fled the scene, prior to their arrival, in his vehicle and made it back to Fort Defiance. It was there that he allegedly took his own life.
The Navajo Nation Police Department, Window Rock District, secured and processed that crime scene where they recovered the firearm believed to have been used at the Cliffside Apartments. NPD Investigators also assisted by locating and interviewing witnesses.
Through interviews, detectives learned that Jefferson had allegedly abused the juvenile female.
This remains an ongoing investigation.
