Student runners participate in 19th annual Tohaali invitational

This year, Baca/Dlo’ ay azhi Community School, located in Prewitt, N.M., boasts its first-ever cross country program.

“We’re in a ‘Four Corner Junior High League,’ which consists of BIE schools in the Four Corner Area,” Head Cross Country Coach Damon Brown told the Sun in a Sept. 26 email.

On Sept. 22, the cross-country team, made up of 4th through 6th graders, participated in the 19th annual Tohaali Community School Cross Country Invitational in Tohaali, N.M., near Shiprock.

“The Baca/Dlo’ ay azhi Falcon Boys took home the first place trophy,” Brown stated. “Our girls did an outstanding job as well with individual awards, Mychalyn King took third place, a medal winner, and Natalie Charlie took 11th place, a ribbon winner, out of 120 runners.”

As for the boys, Brown said the individual winners were Tyler Garcia, at 11th place, a ribbon winner; and Elyjiah Becenti, 16th place, and also a ribbon winner. There were 106 runners.

The girls team includes Marissa Martinez, Rhya Jeff, Shyla Shelly, Natalie Charley, Kailee Donald, Brianna Pike, Autumn Calladitto and Mychalyn King.

The boys team comprises Daniel Jameson, Noah Trickey, Calibe Begay, Lathan Largo, Bryce Pike, Elyjiah Becenti and Tyler Garcia.

Brown coaches alongside Assistant Coach Lenora Francisco. On Sept. 29, the team competed at Wingate Elementary School and on Oct. 6, they’ll run at Crownpoint.
